Tipo Rótulo
I hand-rendered and digitized a roman alphabet based off of Mexican rótulo (hand-painted signage).
Inspired by Mexico’s hand-painted typography, or rótulo, I hand-rendered and digitized a roman typeface. My observations of Mexican rótulo, a dying art due to the adaptation of digital design, consisted of letters that are blocky, geometric, and include either very high or very low x-heights. I included many of those features including horizontal and vertical shadowing, with each letter accompanied by a 45° shadow.
I also included the diacritical mark on the N, true to the Spanish language. I have multiple treatments of the letters, including gradients, skeletal lines, and two-tone shadows. Colors are vibrant, true to the style.
